21/09/2017: New Satellite image

There is a new source for the current satellite imagery used on the NAFI site. This imagery is used on the small cloud conditions display on the NAFI homepage and on the "Check Smoke & Clouds" link (Track Fires > Check conditions > Check Smoke & Clouds). Geoscience Australia have shifted to the new Geostationary Himawari satellite for this imagery - before it displayed imagery from the NASA MODIS satellites. This change means that this satellite imagery is updated more frequently and night-time images are also displayed. The Himawari imagery is coarser than the MODIS imagery so smaller features may be harder to see.

  • Hotspot location on any map is only accurate to within 1.5 km
  • The hotspot symbol on the maps does not indicate the size of the fire
  • Some fires may be small, brief, or obscured by smoke or cloud and go undetected
  • Satellites detect other heat sources such as smokestacks
